Be part of a cube sculpture

Be part of a communal art project. Inspired by the stained glass of Frank Lloyd Wright, on view in the Apostles of Beauty: Arts and Crafts from Britain to Chicago. On December 29, bring your cube to the Ryan Education Center inside the Modern Wing between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m where we'll build a sculpture out of your cube and others as well. If you can't make it at that time, pass your cube along to someone who can attend. Capture the event in words, photos, or video, and upload it here. Your contribution may appear in a special display at the Art Institute.
Part of our FREE family programs during the week between Christmas and New Year's.

#1 Louise Molnar completed the task.

This cube was found at the Hopleaf Bar in Andersonville, back in December and became part of our home over the holidays. Indeed it became invisible, which is part of the reason it didn't go to its event on Dec 29.

When viewing it from an angle where none of the white type is visible, it becomes quite the blank red plastic geometric object.

Red: I've often been fascinated by how colors appear to different people, how often people differ in their description of a color. The cubes are a very straight red, seemingly like a stop sign. Initially intending to explore color theory simply by putting the cube against different backgrounds, I carried it around comparing it with other red objects and found I was also exploring its dimensionality.

As it is not a shiny plastic object, I was surprised how light and color were reflected on the surface in some situations, and how, in some environments through the camera lens, its dimensions seemed to flatten out.

I'll try to upload the images within these last couple hours.

So, the cube isn't exactly StopSign red

Surprisingly, a candle I always thought of as having more purple was a closer match. The two materials had a somewhat similar finish.

less solid in the hallway, shot with an unsteady hand...
(oddly, this wall is in reality as green as the upholstery in previous pic)
